Celebrations for the Chinese New Year, due to begin on Saturday 28th January,  kicked off in style last Friday with the Reading Chinese New Year Gala, organised by the Reading Chinese School. This was the first in a series of events to celebrate the Year of the Rooster.
Twenty-two professional artists from Jiangsu Province of China gave wonderful performances in a range of activities including acrobatics, dance, folk songs, Peking Opera and traditional Chinese music. The Gala was well attended by a diverse audience, with some even coming from as far away as Slough, Newbury and even London to join in with the festivities.
The audience were left mesmerised by performances with the traditional Chinese stringed musical instruments and one of the highlights of the evening was an acrobatic display by a costumed frog with a hula hoop.
Dan, a music specialist, who was involved with last year’s Chinese New Year celebrations was very proud to be participating again and John, a Scottish musical technician, was delighted to hear a Chinese version of Scottish folksong ‘Home, Sweet Home’.
The event was concluded by the Deputy Mayor of Reading, Councillor Rose Williams, delivering a speech and the Director of Jiangsu Delegate sending warm greetings to everyone in attendance.
